Would the Flying Fish 6'6 Make a good beginner board?

Hi,

I'm looking for a good beginner board and was told since I'm a seasoned skateboarder/snowboarder that I may want to try a 6'6 flying fish. Would this board be a good beginner board for a 6'2 male or should I be looking at something bigger?

Thanks for the info.

Would the Flying Fish 6'6 Make a good beginner board?

Hi Newbie,

Most people tend to start on slightly larger mal or long board shapes and work their way down to a short board.  The extra length providing more stability when starting off.  However, with natural ability, and/or experience of other board sports, it's likely you'll progress quickly.  For this reason I think a 6'6" Flying Fish shape would be a good starter board.  They are nice and wide with a good amount of volume so are pretty stable and unlike a mal, you will be able to progress and do more on this style of board if you want to become a short board rider.  Of course it depends what kind of conditions you will be riding in and what your weight is also.

I also know a guy who's new to surfing and is riding a 6'6" TDM2 after only a couple of sessions on a mal and is loving the speed it kicks out!

Hope this helps!
