I've had a 6' 5" fish flying fish for 18 months, great board but I don't think I am getting the most from it.  Bought it new as a board to move me on from a minimal I'd been on for 3 years.  I love the weight the feel and speed and fluidity, but I'm really only now getting to grips with design and features after 5 years surfing.  I'm 6 foot and 9 stone, will never go for a short board.  How would you describe the board's potential performance or what you would expect to get out of this board?  I suspect it's lack of ability that's stopping me from taking it to it's potential so I'm wondering whether I should look at a longer board or really work harder to try to improve my technique!  Having said that it is a great board!

Hi Rich,

Glad to hear you're enjoying your Watercooled board, we encourage people to push all our boards to their limits!  Your question is pretty technical so we are passing it on to Kym Thompson himself to see what he reckons, we'll post his response asap.

Cheers,

Dear Surfer,

In response to your question, I will begin by saying, if you feel you are not getting the most out of the performance it is probably the case in point: although the Fish shape is a performance orientated model for small - medium sized surf, there are many variables which can impact on the equation from types of waves to a surfer's size along with their ability and how frequently they can get in the water. No it is not an old model, but it does have some retro makeup in the genre of the concept of this model.

As a shaper, I have always encouraged people to ride a board as big as they feel comfortable with as opposed to as small as they think they can ride. When choosing a board, always place it on the ground and stand over it. This will give you a more realistic appreciation of its size, better than what you can obtaine from a board standing on end in a rack. Extra length can see you catch waves quicker and more easily. It can also make it easier to control and turn. My rule of thumb is that if it is too small you have problems; if it is too long you can ride and learn to use the length.

From the details you have provided, I could suggest you look at one of my Freerider models. 7'0", 7'2" or 7'4". Again the shape does have some retro history in the makeup, but blended with some modern bottom shapes, rocker,  thickness profiles and fin set up, these shapes pack plenty of performance that you can extract as the skill and technique are developed.

Surfing is about having fun. My ultimate goal as a shaper is to provide surfers with boards that are easy to use, even if you don't arrive at the beach with your "A game" every day.  I trust the advice I have provided is of help in you deciding your next move and this will help you get the most out of your time in the water.

Yours in Surfing,

Kym Thompson
(Designer and Shaper)

Thanks Kim for your advice, it is very much welcomed and I appreciate you giving your time.  You have helped me to settle my mind on what I thought would be the case.  I feel back on track with the idea of it all being about having fun, not necessarily always chasing improved performance and I'll certainly be looking at your recomendations.  In the meantime my 12 year old daughter keeps pinching the board off me as a change from her foamy and is loving it too, so she'll no doubt be ripping me to pieces in no time!

Many thanks

Rich

Hi,
What dou you recommend for a day to day use surfboard since I'm 6' tall and 165 pounds.I`ve been surfing for the last 20 years in Brazil, Spain, Costa Rica and California but I'm not like a pro just a regular surfer.
I am between the e-lite 6'0" flyingfish and the e-lite TDM2 6'4".
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Giacomo
